Jammu/New Delhi, July 2 : A lady officer of the Indian Army has committed suicide in Jammu.
Captain Megha Razdan of the 113 Engineers Regiment was found dead in her newly allotted quarter on Sunday night with a suicide note.
Captain Razdan married Captain Chaitanya Wadekar last September. There was no reported discord between them. The contents of the suicide note have not been disclosed and it is with the police who are investigating the case, army officials said.
Captain Razdan's suicide has once again raised concern within the army and the Defence Ministry about the rising incidents of suicide in the armed forces.
There have been 53 cases of suicide in the Army so far till June this year.
There has been no upward trend in the number of suicide cases, said Army officials. In 2006, there were 101 suicide cases, while in 2005 there were 75 cases.
In 2006, there was only one case of a suicide by a lady army officer - Captain Sushmita Chakravarti who committed suicide in Udhampur-. In 2005, Major Shobha Rani committed suicide in Bangalore.
At the recent, Army Commanders' Conference, Defence Minister A K Antony had expressed concern over the number of suicide cases and incidents of fragging in the army, and had called for better communication between officers and juniors.
The number of army personnel killed in operations against terrorist and insurgents this year is less than 50.
