Agartala, July 19 : Rubber planters in Tripura were recently exposed to the advancing techniques of rubber plantation at a workshop organised by the Bangalore-based Indian Institute of Plantation Management (IIPM).
The workshop was held at the Chanmari Rubber Board campus on the outskirts of Tripura capital Agartala.
The workshop was aimed at institutional building of rubber planters.
V G Dhanakumar, the director of the institute, said the workshop would help growers brand Tripura rubber effectively.
He expressed satisfaction over the IIPM endeavour, saying "The workshop will help in bringing rubber planters onto a single platform."
Participants at the workshop were mainly representatives of the Rubber Planters Society (RPS)."Tripura has over 35000 square hectares under rubber production. Tapping has already started in 18000 square hectares of plantation, and production is going on. Rubber producers do not get the real price of the product," claimed M Dey, a participant.
Most participants also said that such workshops would encourage others to enter this profitable sector.
Tea, spice and coffee planters could also realise their potential in the sector by acquiring management education and training.
At present, Tripura produces over 17,000 metric tones of natural rubber annually.
Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh has said that India's growing demand for natural rubber could be met by increasing production in Tripura.
