With prayers on their lips, hundreds of Tibetan monks and youth walked through the streets of Varanasi on Wednesday to protest against China holding the 2008 Olympics.

Varanasi, July 19 : With prayers on their lips, hundreds of Tibetan monks and youth walked through the streets of Varanasi on Wednesday to protest against China holding the 2008 Olympics.

Citing the ongoing human rights violations in Tibet, as the reason, Jiang Dorej of the Tibetan Youthederation called for global support against the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

"We want to ask all people in the World, especially Indian people, to stand behind us and to strive to prohibit Olympics not to be held in China. In order to have Olympics, the nation has to be free from Communism and free from conflict and dispute," Dorej said.

The protesters also called on the Chinese Government to release the 11th Panchen Lama.

Nigma, a Tibetan protester, said that we want the Chinese Government to give us permission to meet the Panchen Lama.

A boy, Gedun Choekyi Nyima, whom the Dalai Lama had picked to succeed him is believed to have been under house arrest in China since 1995.According to human rights groups, Nyima is the world's youngest political prisoner.
