Singh is on a day-long visit to Jammu during which Jammu University will confer an honorary doctorate degree on him.
The Prime Minister will be conferred with Doctor of Letters degree at varsity's special convocation by Chancellor and State Governor S K Sinha. Jammu University will be the first Indian university to confer the degree to Singh after he became the Prime Minister on May 22, 2004.
Security has been beefed up in Jammu and its surrounding areas in the wake of his visit. Security forces, both state police and para-military, have been deployed at and around the venues where Singh is scheduled to visit.
Singh was scheduled to visit Jammu on Tuesday, but it was postponed in view of the national mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar.
