The Left Front will be meeting on July 19 to decide on the their candidate for the Vice Presidential race.
New Delhi, July 15 : The Left Front will be meeting on July 19 to decide on the their candidate for the Vice Presidential race.
This was disclosed by Communist Party of India general secretary A B Bardhan here today.
Speaking to reporters, Bardhan said: "That person should be secular, no doubt, and (he or she) should be capable of officiating deliberations of the Rajya Sabha," since the Vice President of the country also officiates the upper house of the parliament.
On being asked why the Left parties are not keen to have a political person as the Vice President in contrast to what they had demanded during the run-up to the Presidential race, Bardhan defended it by saying: "There are many who are not members of political parties but still have political acumen. If there is a candidate like that who is acceptable to all parties, it will be great." e also rejected the notion that he himself was one of the frontrunner for the post by saying that the Communist party does not allow its cadre, least of all its General Secretary, to be hijacked into any such post.
"My duty is to the party," he added.
In return for the Left's support to the Congress-led UPA's nominee for the post of the President, the UPA has agreed to support Left's nominee for the Vice President's post.
The polling for the Vice President election will be held on August 10, as the term of the incumbent Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat expires on August 18.
The last date for filing of nominations is July 23 and the last day for withdrawal of names is on July 26.
