Omar urges Musharraf to continue Indo-Pak peace talks

National Conference Chief Omar Abdullah on Friday appealed to Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf to continue peace talks with India despite the internal strife in his country.

Srinagar, July13 : National Conference Chief Omar Abdullah on Friday appealed to Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf to continue peace talks with India despite the internal strife in his country.

Omar said that the situation in Pakistan was volatile and that the conflict could not be resolved without resolution of the Kashmir issue.

"I would like to appeal to General Pervez Musharraf -do not go back on your initiative. I know the situation in Pakistan is volatile and there are people there who are advising you against it, but if you do not resolve the Kashmir problem, your own problem will not be solved," said Abdullah, addressing a public meeting held to mark the Martyrs' Day in the State.

Internal unrest in Pakistan began earlier this year with street demonstrations following sacking of the country's top judge Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Musharraf's action drew flak from lawyers and pro-democracy intelligentsia across the country.

The latest Lal Masjid crisis has brought the growing fundamentalism in Pakistan into focus.
