New Delhi, July 12 : The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today gave its approval for the improvement of the Storm Water Drainage System (BRIMSTOWAD) in Brihan Mumbai at an estimated cost of over Rupees 12 billion (Rs.1200.53 crore).
The project will become operational within four years. On completion and augmentation of the Storm Water Drainage system for higher rainfall intensity with higher runoff coefficient, the incidence of flooding in Mumbai will be reduced and losses of Rs.1550 crore will be saved per year.
The storm water drainage system in the city is more than 150 years old and is designed for rainfall of 25 mm per hour and a run off coefficient of 0.5.
"Improvement of the Storm Water Drainage system for higher rainfall intensity reaching up to 100 mm per hour with a higher run-off coefficient of one will reduce the incidence of flooding in Mumbai," said a Cabinet release.
The central assistance to the Maharashtra Government includes three per cent contingencies. The project will be implemented by Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM).
The Cabinet said cost escalations, if any, would be borne by the State Government or the MCGM.
"Cost of operations, maintenance and rehabilitation and relief for the families affected by the project shall be borne by State Government," the Cabinet release said.
The improvement cost has been approved by Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO), the technical wing of Urban Development Ministry.
The Centre and the State Government together will monitor the project for timely completion and cost overruns.
Mumbai city has at present Gravity Storm Water system consisting of network of drains below road level in city area and open drains in the both eastern and Western suburbs.
