The gun battle is said to have taken place on Monday night, in the Elmapatti-Regadatta Jungle, about 550 Km from the State capital Raipur.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Special Police Force were involved in the operation to flush out the rebels from the area.
Officials said the gun battle had lasted for about five hours, and confirmed reports that 27 security personnel were missing after the incident.
