Sohrabuddins brother complains of death threat

Rubabuddin Sheikh, brother of the victim of the 2005 Gujarat fake encounter Sohrabuddin Sheikh, on Sunday called for an increase in the security provided to him, saying that he was receiving threatening calls.

He said that he has been receiving threatening calls from unknown numbers asking him to withdraw the case, he filed recently against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks justifying the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in the 2005 fake encounter, or he and his family members would be killed.

On Friday, Rubabuddin filed an application in the Supreme Court seeking registration of case against Modi for his remarks justifying the killing of Sohrabuddin.

Rubabuddin, who lives in Madhya Pradesh and was here in connection with a function, said he has informed the state police about the threats to him and his family. However, he said no action has been taken so far in connection with his complaint.

On the directions of the Supreme Court, Rubabuddin has been provided two security personnel.

However, he said that security was insufficient, and it should be increased.

Rubabuddin's complaint comes amidst political "war of words" between the Congress and the BJP over the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter.

At an election rally in Jamnagar District on December 4, Modi admitted that Sohrabuddin Sheikh's encounter did happen in Gujarat, saying the latter got what he deserved.

"Yes, Sohrabuddin's encounter happened in Gujarat, and if Sonia Gandhi (United Progressive Alliance Chairperson) wants she can hang me for this," said Modi.

Following Modi's remarks, the Election Commission issued a notice to Modi on charges of violating the Model Code of Conduct by invoking religious sentiments for political ends.

In his explanation to the EC, Modi completely denied the charges and said that the notice is based on the "basis of unverified and false media reports."

He also tried to justify his statements against Sohrabuddin saying that it was in retaliation to the provocation by Sonia Gandhi

"It is my political response to (Sonia) Gandhi's allegation that I am 'Maut-ka-Sodagar" (Merchant of death). I have replied back alleging that the Congress party is helping those who have spread terrorism in the country," he wrote in the letter to the commission.

The EC is meeting today to consider Modi's response.
