Social activists stage Save Democracy street plays in Modis turf

nagar (Gujarat), Dec 9 (ANISocial activists belonging to a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) have been enacting street plays in Maninagar, where Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is contesting, urging voters not to be swayed away by the Vibrant Gujarat campaign launched by the BJP.Seeking peoples support to Save Democracy in the State, the group called Anhad is covering every household, organising cultural programmes and street corner meets during their 10-day campaign here, which is considered a BJP stronghold. Anhad has been conducting its Save Democracy campaign in Gujarat for the last eight months. Under this we have covered 630 villages and 22 district headquarters, mainly taking the message of peace and democracy to the ordinary people of Gujarat, said Shabnam Hashmi, convener of Anhad.

"Anhad has been conducting its 'Save Democracy' campaign in Gujarat for the last eight months. Under this we have covered 630 villages and 22 district headquarters, mainly taking the message of peace and democracy to the ordinary people of Gujarat," said Shabnam Hashmi, convener of Anhad.

"We are exploding poll myths in Gujarat. The fact that what is seen on television screens and huge newspaper ads, the ordinary Gujarat is very very different. We have taken out a lot of data, which we are placing in front of people and asking the people to vote according to their conscience," Hashmi added.

Local residents of the area feel that they are benefiting from the campaign.

"Prices of essential commodities are on the rise and the youth are not getting employment. This awareness campaign of these people is beneficial," said Gautam, a local of Maninagar.

In one day, one group covers three to four villages, and a total of about 11-15 villages are visited by these groups depending on the distances between the villages and the terrain of the district, which they cover on a particular day.

The NGO claims of having distributed more than 3 lakh leaflets and one lakh copies of the Preamble of the Indian Constitution.
