SAARC designers showcase their creativity

Designers from nations that are members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) showcased their creativity at an event titled Threads of Unity here on Friday evening.

New Delhi, Dec 8 : Designers from nations that are members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) showcased their creativity at an event titled 'Threads of Unity' here on Friday evening.

The Fashion Design Council of India organised the show at the behest of the External Affairs Ministry to coincide with the seventh meeting of SAARC Ministers.

The show focused on the textile heritage of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Maldives and Afghanistan.

"Over the last couple of days, there have been several cultural events binding the eight SAARC countries together. There was one folklore audition, fashion and food tradition. And I think all of them go a very long way in strengthening traditional cultural bonds," said Ambika Soni, Union Minister of Tourism and Culture.

The participants said the event offered them an opportunity to showcase their talent before an international audience.

"Well for Afghanistan, it was one of the biggest events. This is the first time and we also previewed all the secrets that Afghanistan has," said Mina Sharzoy, an Afghanistan designer.

The fashion show was organised to generate the rich cultural heritage of the region by highlighting the textile traditions and indigenous handicraft and embroidery techniques of the SAARC nations.

SAARC provides a platform for the peoples of South Asia to work together in a spirit of friendship, trust and understanding. It aims to accelerate the process of economic and social development in member states.
