The recently held first R.N.Tamchon Memorial Football Trophy was watched by many sports lovers in Delhi as 15 teams representing various tribes of the northeast region in a football tournament participated.

New Delhi, Dec.8 : The recently held first R.N.Tamchon Memorial Football Trophy was watched by many sports lovers in Delhi as 15 teams representing various tribes of the northeast region in a football tournament participated.

Organised in the memory of R. N. Tamchon, the former Assistant Commissioner of Police in Delhi, the sports event intended to promote peace, friendship, unity and interaction through sports amongst the people of north-east.

According to Ramnganing Muivah, Joint Secretary, Central Public Works Department and Vice President, Tangkul Naga Students Delhi, Football is one sport that evokes maximum passion all over the north-east.

"We have many talented players but we don't have opportunities. Our sincere endeavour is to give them opportunities so that some clubs pick them up and give them a chance to play at the international level," Muivah said.

On the occasion, Mani Charenamei, the Manipuri Parliamentarian, said: "This is an appropriate step taken by the Tangkhul Naga Society and only through these kind of initiatives we can come together. We can exhibit the talent that we have been blessed with."

The winning trophy was lifted by the Wung United while Ching-Tam United was runner up. Both teams belonged to Manipur.

Tuireising Ruvah,Captain,Wung United, said: "This is for the first time that teams from the North East are playing here. I think this is an effective platform to boost the talent of young and upcoming players."

Chongtham Thoiba, Captain, Ching-Tam United, said: "In Manipur, maximum number of youths are involved in sports. This is a major employment generating avenue. International players in the Indian team are Manipuris. They are playing in different parts of the country for different clubs as well as in services."

For youngsters from Manipur and major parts of the north-east, sports achievements are an advantage while applying for jobs.

It is hoped that sports can motivate these youngsters to share a common platform for a better social and economic uplift.
