Congress party President Sonia Gandhi today said that her party was committed to highlight the grave failures of the Narendra Modi Government in Gujarat.

New Delhi, Dec 6 : Congress party President Sonia Gandhi today said that her party was committed to highlight the "grave failures" of the Narendra Modi Government in Gujarat.

Addressing the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) meeting, Sonia said: "In our campaign, we are reaffirming our firm commitment to fundamental Constitutional and secular values and highlighting the grave failures of the BJP government."

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was also present at the meeting.

In a reference to the sting operation by Tehelka, a weekly newsmagazine, over the 2002 post-Godhra riots, Sonia said: "The media had also exposed the active involvement of the BJP leadership in the brutalities which took place in 2002."

She further said that the promises made by the BJP in Gujarat over the past decade or more have turned out to be hollow.

"Highly exaggerated and in some cases false claims on development are being made," she said, noting that she feels that the people of Gujarat were looking forward to a change.

The CPP Chairperson also complimented Dr. Singh for his "wise leadership," which she said: "he has demonstrated with quiet determination."

Slamming the BJP for its "obstructionist attitude" in Parliament, Sonia said the "hollowness" of the main Opposition's stance was once again exposed during the debate on the Indo-US civil nuclear deal.

She also made a veiled attack on the CPI-M-led government in West Bengal over the violence in Nandigram.

"A permanent solution must be found to ensure that such incidents do not occur again and again," she said.

Sonia also expressed hope that in the Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh, the party would get a renewed mandate, as the party's government in the State "has worked for the welfare of the people and development of the state over the past five years."

She said within a couple of weeks the party would have to gear itself for elections in Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland.

Referring to the violence in Assam, Sonia said it needed to be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

She said the party's government was prompt in ordering an inquiry and has also asked for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
