Specially abled takes part in walkathon

Specially abled people today took part in a walkathon, Run for Peace, on the occasion of International Day for Disabled Persons.

New Delhi, Dec 3 : Specially abled people today took part in a walkathon, 'Run for Peace', on the occasion of International Day for Disabled Persons.

The students took part in walkathon holding placards saying 'We are able, not disables' and 'We want education not sympathy'.

The walk was organized at the Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology (N.S.I.T) here to instill a feeling of equity between specially abled and completely abled students.

"These disabled kids have marched to our college. The aim is to show that these kids are as able as normal students," says Professor Ranjit Singh, Director, Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology.

"The world should accept the disabled into its fold. It's a major responsibility of society to ensure them a life of dignity and fulfillment," says Bumendra Nayal, president of Innocent World Charitable Society.

The walk was organized by Masoom Duniya, a project of Innocent Worldharitable Society (Regd), a non-governmental organisation, which caters to the needs of the mentally challenged children belonging to the economically weaker section of the society.

Theme for this year's World Disability Day was Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Action in Development. The theme aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and muster support for the dignity, rights and wellbeing of people living with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

About six hundred million people live with various types of disabilities all over the world with about 85 percent of them living in low-income countries.
