Agitating rail commuters face brutal police action

Maharashtra Police on Saturday baton charged railway commuters who had blocked rail traffic here demanding additional coaches in the train heading towards Mumbai.

Kalwa (Maharashtra), Dec 29 : Maharashtra Police on Saturday baton charged railway commuters who had blocked rail traffic here demanding additional coaches in the train heading towards Mumbai.

Police officials maintained that they had to use force to disperse the crowd.

The agitators blocked the local rail traffic and staged a protest at the railway station that later took a violent turn. They pelted stones in which security personnel were injured.

Responding to the aggression, police officials baton charged the huge mob which instigated the crowd further.

"When I was bringing the railway personnel, they started pelting stones at us. Then at that time, we used force to disperse the crowd," Thane Police Commissioner Kanakrathan said.

The commuters claim that there used to be a heavy rush during peak hours and their demand was fully justified.

"We submitted an application around two months back to the concerned authorities and also warned them that we would protest if our demands are not met, "said Nishant, a commuter.
