Nation celebrates Eid-ul-Zuha

People in different parts of the country are celebrating Eid-ul-Zuha or Baqr-e-Eid, the festival of sacrifice with much fervour and gaiety.

New Delhi, Dec 21 : People in different parts of the country are celebrating Eid-ul-Zuha or Baqr-e-Eid, the festival of sacrifice with much fervour and gaiety.

On this day, Muslims sacrifice the goats and distribute its meat among family, friends and the poor.

Muslims believe a sacrificed goat is a reflection of one's own spiritual sacrifice, and see it as essential for achieving communion with Allah.

Eid-ul-Zuha is a time to offer the perfect goat to the Prophet.

The festival also marks the end of the Haj.

President Pratibha Patil and Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari have greeted the nation on the occasion.

In her message, President Patil has said, "I extend my greetings and good wishes to all my fellow countrymen. Let us on this day remind ourselves of the spirit of service and sacrifice associated with this festival and motivate ourselves to work towards progress and prosperity of the nation".

Vice President Ansari has said the festival celebrates the spirit of sacrifice that God requires of man.

"The joy of sharing and doing charity on this festival provides comfort to the poor and unites us all in common brotherhood," Ansari said.

Greeting the nation on the occasion, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said that the festival commemorates the spirit of supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Ibrahim. This selfless sacrifice is an inspiring example of subordinating self-interest to the greater good of humanity.
