A senior Maoist leader Malla Raji Reddy has been arrested in the town of Angamaly in Kerala.
Kerala, Dec 20, :A senior Maoist leader Malla Raji Reddy has been arrested in the town of Angamaly in Kerala.
Malla Raji Reddy was incharge of Maoists cadres in Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.
Police say that Reddy had been underground for over three decades, and is a contemporary of Maoist chief Ganapathy.
On Sunday,over 100 Maoist rebels escaped from a prison in Dantewada in Chhattisgarh.
Thousands of people have died since Maoists launched attacks over 30 years ago.
The rebels claim that they are fighting for the rights of landless farmers and neglected tribes.
Over the last two years,police say they have arrested or killed several Maoist leaders.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described the Maoists as the most serious threat to national security in India.
The rebels reportedly operate in 182 districts in India, mainly in the states of Jharkhand, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal.
