New Delhi, Dec 16 : With three days left for the final voting in the 65 seats of Himachal Pradesh Assembly, the ruling Congress party in the State expressed confidence of getting an absolute majority.
"We will get absolute majority in Himachal Pradesh," senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily said.
He said that the 'peace loving' people of the State want the continuation of the stability provided by the Congress government in the State, and the developmental activities carried out by the Chief Minister Vir Bhadra Singh have created a 'positive' atmosphere in the State.
Moily said that the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made a great blunder by announcing former Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal "who led the most corrupt government in the State", as its Chief Ministerial candidate.
"The State became bankrupt under Dhumal's regime," Moily said, citing a CAG report.
In Himachal Pradesh there was no visible development in infrastructure or in social sector during previous BJP government, but today all around there is a tremendous development. Tourism industry is booming and the GDP of the State has tripled during the Congress government in the State, Moily added.
He said that less coverage in the media of the activities preceding the polls in Himachal Pradesh also demonstrated the fact that there is nothing negative against the Congress government led by Vir Bhadra Singh.
With the Centre providing the State with 2100 crores and announcing tax holidays there, Himachal Pradesh has gained 30 thousand crores in investment that would continue the rapid development of the State, the Congress leader pointed out.
With over 4.5 million people eligible to cast votes, the first phase of elections in the State was held in Lahaul Spiti and adjoining areas on November 14.
The second phase of elections in the State are scheduled to be held on December 19. Results will be announced by the end of the month.
The term of the State Legislative Assembly is due to expire on March 9, 2008.
