One killed, five injured as protesters-police clash in J-K

At lease one person was killed and five others were injured as police opened fire and baton-charged members of an agitating group, protesting against the non-allotment of a degree college to Magam in Jammu and Kashmirs Budgam District, on Saturday.

Magam (J-K), Dec 15 : At lease one person was killed and five others were injured as police opened fire and baton-charged members of an agitating group, protesting against the non-allotment of a degree college to Magam in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam District, on Saturday.

The residents of Magam took to the streets and blocked the Srinagar-Gulmarg road after reports suggested that the town was not allotted a degree college at a State Cabinet meeting. They said that the state government had promised the town a degree college.

After several attempts failed to persuade the agitators to life the blocked, the police resorted to baton-charge and firing.

Chanting anti-government slogans, protestors torched a bus and threw stones at police and paramilitary personnel.

On Friday, the State Cabinet approved the establishment of 18 new degree-colleges in the state. Out of these, two are for women, one each at Srinagar and Pulwama.

The other colleges are to be set up at Kokernag, Gurez, Tangdhar, Dharmari, Kilhotran, Chatroo, Banihal, Budhal, Nowshera, Khansahib, Uttersoo, Sogam, Kilam, Jammu city, Bishnah and Bani.
