CBI files detailed report before SC on Subbas citizenship

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today filed before the Supreme Court a detailed report relating to the investigation carried by it on the citizenship of Lok Sabha MP from Assam, Mani Kumar Subba.

New Delhi, Dec 10 : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today filed before the Supreme Court a detailed report relating to the investigation carried by it on the citizenship of Lok Sabha MP from Assam, Mani Kumar Subba.

The report was placed before a Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan in a sealed cover.

The court had earlier asked the CBI to file a report on Subba's citizenship after a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by Noida-based Birendra Nath Singh.

The PIL had alleged that Subba has changed his name from Mani Raj Limbo after fleeing from Nepal.

Subba has been accused of being a murderer in a remote Nepal village, to which he is suspected to belong and had also allegedly committed a jail-break in that country before escaping to India. He tried to settle first in Sikkim, and on failing, ran away to Tinsukia in Upper Assam in the 1960s'.

Nepal Court sentenced Subha to life and lodged him in the Eelam Jail there. He escaped from there in 1962.

He is said to be largest lottery operator in the country.
