Supreme Court rejects PUCL activist Binayak Sens petition

The Supreme Court today rejected the bail petition of the Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) activist Binayak Sen, who has been under arrest since May 2007.

New Delhi, Dec 10 : The Supreme Court today rejected the bail petition of the Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) activist Binayak Sen, who has been under arrest since May 2007.

On 14 May 2007, Sen was arrested for aiding and abetting Naxal activity in Chhattisgarh under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act.

Dismissing the bail petition, a bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhan said: "It did not agree with the grounds raised by Sen for enlarging him on bail."

The police claimed that they had recovered letters in possession of one Piyush Guha that established that he was acting as a courier for the Naxalite movement.

Dr. Sen had filed a bail petition in the apex court after the same were turned down by first by the Sessions Court and later by the High Court of Chhattisgarh at Bilaspur.

A medical practioner by profession, Dr. Binayak Sen is also the Vice-President of the Chhattisgarh unit of the Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL).
