Karat gives 15-day ultimatum to Andhra govt over police firing incident

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) General Secretary Prakash Karat on Sunday gave a 15-day ultimatum to the Congress Government in Andhra Pradesh to take action against those responsible for the killing of eight farmers in July 28 police firing in States Khammam District.

Agartala, Aug 5 : The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) General Secretary Prakash Karat on Sunday gave a 15-day ultimatum to the Congress Government in Andhra Pradesh to take action against those responsible for the killing of eight farmers in July 28 police firing in State's Khammam District.

Addressing a rally here, Karat said that he and Communist Party of India (CPI) General Secretary AB Bardhan will meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday to discuss the incident.

He said that the Left parties would ask Sonia to pressurise the Y S Rajasekhara Reddy Government to punish the guilty policemen and pay adequate compensation to the victims' families.

Karat said that the struggle for land reform in Andhra Pradesh has not come to an end with the incident.

He further said his party is monitoring the situation in the State.

If positive results are not seen within 15 days, then the struggle would force the Andhra Pradesh's Congress Government to resign, he added.

Karat said that even after 60 years of independence except in the three Left-ruled states - Kerala, West Bengal and Tripura - very little has been done for the backward class.

The CPI (M), the CPI and 195 mass organisations have been conducting a movement for house sites and land for the poor since May 2 this year.

The Congress Government had promised distribution of surplus land to the landless poor. The State has so far distributed about 450,000 acres of land to about 300,000 beneficiaries

Meanwhile, Karat told reporters that the Left parties will on Tuesday discuss the India-US civil nuclear cooperation deal and only after that they would make their view on the deal public.
