Ludhiana, Aug.31 : At a time when many families across the country are raising concern over the impact of TV serials on the general household, the growing fascination for laughter shows on the small screen is courtesy comedians like Jaswinder Bhalla.

Popularly known as "Chacha Chatar Singh", Jaswinder believes that the role of comedy is not just limited to making the audience laugh. It can play a major role in conveying serious messages on spreading awareness or pointing out various laxities in various walks of life in a lighter vein. And, Jaswinder claims to be doing just that.

On various occasions, Jaswinder has tried to pin-point social evils. Be it dowry, drug addiction or widespread corruption, all have been favourite subjects for this famous comedian-cum-satirist on and off the small screen.

Jaswinder says: "Through all of my audio and video albums of satire on social evils, I have realised that people like satires if it targets a social problem or helps in eradicating social evils. People appreciate such a work."

Jaswinder says: "I view myself as a merchant of comedy who works day-and-night for Punjabi, Punjabis and "Punjabiyat" (Punjabi identity) to erase tensions of his listeners by making them laugh."

Having studied in a government-run school at Doraha area, Jaswinder graduated as Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in Ludhiana.

Jaswinder says: "It was during my university days that I met Bal Mukund Sharma, known as `Bhatija' (nephew) in my audio-video series of `Chhankatta' album s. After singing folk music, my career took a complete U turn and I took up comedy, skits and mono-acting."

In 2006, Jaswinder celebrated silver jubilee with his 25th volume of Chhankatta album.

He believes television programmes like "Laughter Challenge" have proved beneficial for the popularity of comedy based programmes. These laughter serials add some light moments in the highly stressful life of people, especially in the cities.

Jaswinder, however, says that the popularity of such serials is a credit to the public which is showing a deep interest into this form of entertainment.
