New Delhi, Aug 3 : The Central Government today notified the coming into force of the English and Foreign Languages University Act, 2006.
With the coming into force of the Act, the country now has a dedicated Central university for the promotion and development of English and other foreign languages, besides their literature.
The English and Foreign Languages University would be the 24th Central University established by an Act of Parliament.
Professor Abhai Maurya of Department of Slavic Studies, University of Delhi, has assumed charge as the first Vice-Chancellor of the university from today.
Professor Maurya, who hails from a peasant family in Haryana, is a first generation learner.
He has been a professor of Russian literature since 1988, and is the founder head of the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Delhi.
An author of 12 books, both scholarly and creative, Professor Maurya has over 50 research papers to his credit.
He has been awarded and facilitated internationally and has been actively associated with various UNESCO bodies.
One of the awards is the "A.S. Pushkin" Medal, the highest honour in the field of Russian literature and language. His novel "Fall of a Hero" (in English, 1998), "Yugnayika" (in Hindi, 2004) and "Mukti-Path" (in Hindi, 2006) have won critical acclaim.
