New Delhi, Aug 27 : Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has greeted citizens in India and abroad ahead of the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, which will be celebrated on August 28.
In his message, Dr. Singh said: "The festival is a special occasion to celebrate the bond of love between a brother and his sister. It also marks a re-affirmation of traditional family values."
During the festival, women and girls tie a rakhi (thread of love) around their brothers' wrists, and pray for each others' well being.
Brothers, in turn, bless their sisters, and promise to protect her from all evils.
The tradition of Raksha Bandhan dates back to several centuries, when Hindu Queen Rani Roopmati, at time of war, sent a thread to the Mughal ruler Jehangir, requesting his protection from the enemy.
Emperor Jehangir accepted the thread and honoured her request.
