Mata Amritanandamayi has pledged 48 million dollars for the relief of the countrys drought-hit farmers.
Kollam (Kerala), Aug 25 : Mata Amritanandamayi has pledged 48 million dollars for the relief of the country's drought-hit farmers.
Hundreds of farmers have committed suicide this year in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, as a result of failed crops, import competition and crippling interest payments.
The godwoman also pledged to provide free education to 500,000 poor children without any distinction of religion.
"There are lot of women in the society who suffered a lot due to various problems; I can see different problems of them. Children are entitled to quality education irrespective of social status," she told reporters at her hermitage near Kollam in Kerala.
Amritanandamayi, 51, who wears a white saree and a large diamond stud on her nose, has tens of thousands of followers in India and abroad.
