Ranchi (Jharkhand), Aug 23 : Police baton charged agitating teachers here, following a demand for better remuneration. About a dozen were injured in the clash.
Around 5,000 temporary teachers laid siege to the State Assembly building in Ranchi, forcing the police to fire teargas and beat them with sticks.
For the last two years, the State has experienced a shortage of teachers. To cope with the problem, teachers were hired on temporary basis.
"Till our demands are met, we will not relent. The Government should listen to us. The salary they are giving us is less than what a labourer gets," said Kailash Pandey, the President of the Temporary Teachers' Association.
Over 35,000 teachers are currently employed in the state on a temporary or casual basis, drawing a measly salary of around 2,500 to 3,000 rupees a month.
