CPI(M) Central Committees meets today to discuss Indo-US nuclear deal

The Communist Party of India (Marxist)s Central Committee (CC) will meet here today to decide on their future course of action on the Indo-US nuclear deal.

New Delhi, Aug 22 : The Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s Central Committee (CC) will meet here today to decide on their future course of action on the Indo-US nuclear deal.

The two-day CC meeting is expected to draw out its future strategy and how far it could go to oppose the government on this issue.

They have warned of "serious consequences" for the government if it proceeds ahead operationalising the nuclear deal, which still needs to be approved by the US Congress.

The support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government would be withdrawn if the government goes ahead and negotiates a safeguard agreement with the IAEA and the Nuclear Suppliers Group.

So far, the government has indicated that it will go ahead with the negotiations with IAEA.

The pact with Washington will result in ending three decades of American sanctions on nuclear trade with India, but the Left parties argue that it would undermine India's nuclear security and sovereignty.

The nuclear issue is likely to be debated in the Lok Sabha on August 29 or 30. The debate is crucial as the government is maintaining that it would reveal its stand on the Left`s objections while responding to it.

The UPA Government is facing its worst crisis since coming to power in 2004.

Denying speculation of withdrawal of his party's support to the Manmohan Singh Government, veteran CPI(M) leader Jyoti Basu on Monday ruled out mid-term elections.

Earlier, the Congress Party had mooted a proposal for forming a committee, which would include the Left party members and diplomats to look at the concerns of its Left allies.

The government, however, rejected a proposal by the opposition to form a Joint Parliamentary Committee to look into the nuclear deal.
