A high-profile Malaysian car rally, which is on its way to Kuala Lumpur from Cape Town in South Africa, entered India on Monday after crossing the Wagah border check post in Punjab.

Wagah Border (Punjab), Aug 21 : A high-profile Malaysian car rally, which is on its way to Kuala Lumpur from Cape Town in South Africa, entered India on Monday after crossing the Wagah border check post in Punjab.

The rallyists received a warm welcome from paramilitaries at Wagah. Artistes also performed folk danced and took part in cultural programmes.

"I am very sure that it will be a very comfortable passing through India, and we appreciate very much this warm reception. This is overwhelming, and we hope we will continue to get maximum cooperation, economic as well as military," said Lieutenant General Sharn of the Malaysian Royal Air Force.

"We chose Africa because there are different people and cultures. We managed to see what we wanted to see," said He Dato Haji Zainal Abibin, Deputy Defence Minister of Malaysia.

The rally, comprising of 40 participants, will pass through Delhi, Agra, Allahabad, Patna, Siliguri, Guwahati and Imphal before finally exiting to Myanmar through Moreh in Manipur.

Before touching Indian soil, the rally passed through Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman and Pakistan. It is being held as part of Malaysia's Golden Jubilee independence celebrations.
