Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today gave away the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award-2006 to noted Gandhian from Assam Hem Dutta on the occasion of 63rd birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
New Delhi, Aug 20 : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today gave away the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award-2006 to noted Gandhian from Assam Hem Dutta on the occasion of 63rd birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Speaking at the occasion, Singh said, "I do believe that Hembhai, from my adopted state of Assam, is a living example of non-violent mass action for peaceful social transformation."
The award, which carries a citation and cash Award of Rs. 2.5 lakhs, is presented every year on Rajiv Gandhi's birth anniversary to those who have made outstanding contribution to promote communal harmony and to the fight against terrorism and violence.
Previous recipients of the award are Nirmala Deshpande, Swami Agnivesh, Madari Moideen and S.N. Subba Rao.
