The Haryana Police today rescued 15 child labourers from a hazardous sponge factory in Karnal.
Karnal (Haryana), Aug 2 : The Haryana Police today rescued 15 child labourers from a hazardous sponge factory in Karnal.
Police raided a sponge factory at Karnal after one of the rescued children wrote a letter to a local newspaper.
"These children will be given medical treatment and if they were found underage they will be sent to children home," said R.K. Singh, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Karnal.
All the rescued children hailed from Barabanki District of Uttar Pradesh. They were employed to sort out sponges and cut them into required shapes.
"We were working in the sponge factory. We are 15 altogether," said Bablu, a rescued child.
Employing children below the age of 14 in hazardous industries, roadside eateries and automobile workshops is banned in the country.
According to the Central Labour Ministry, there are 12 million children labourers across the country, but activists say the number could be five times higher.
