New Delhi, Aug 2 : The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for taking over the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), Thiruvanthapuram
This paves the way for the Department of Biotechnology to control the administrative function of the RGCB, which is an autonomous institute.
With this development the RGCB becomes the only central biotechnology institute in Kerala.
This step would play a major role in implementing relevant biotechnology projects both for the State and for the region as a whole, a government release stated.
The institute is also looking forward to become a national research centre for bio-drug discovery programmes based on the rich knowledge of traditional systems of medicine prevalent in Kerala.
It also aims to utilize its expertise in cell and molecular biology for developing diagnostic and prognostics markers for disease, targets for drug development and utilization of biomarker data for developing diagnostic kits for better and early diagnosis of cancer and infectious diseases.
