New Delhi, Aug 17 : The Steel Technology Center will be set up at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur.
The Empowered Committee of the Ministry of Steel under the chairmanship of R.S. Pandey cleared the proposal that will require Rupees 20 crore for the establishment.
The proposed Steel Technology Centre would be run according to the rules and regulations applicable to such Centres already existing at IIT Kharagpur.
While IIT Kharagpur would provide facilities like manpower, administrative and infrastructure support and available equipment and laboratory, the Centre would encourage faculty members to offer more courses on iron and steel.
The Center would carry out laboratory trials of technology developed by the Center in association with IIT Kharagpur. he Empowered committee also cleared a proposal to create a post of Chair professor in the Department of Metallurgy in IIT, Kharagpur, Benaras Hindu University and NITS at Rourkela, Durgapur and Jamshedpur and other institutes, where study of Metallurgical Engineering is pursued.
