Five killed in Mumbai building collapse(Lead: Mumbai building collapse)

Five persons were killed after a portion of a five-storeyed Giridhar building collapsed onto an adjoining house in south Mumbai late on Friday night.

Mumbai, Aug 18 : Five persons were killed after a portion of a five-storeyed Giridhar building collapsed onto an adjoining house in south Mumbai late on Friday night.

The upper two floors of the building collapsed onto Chadha Mansion adjacent to it on Lamington Road.

The debris had fallen on a hutment, which was inside the compound of Chadha Mansion where members of the Ojha family lived.

"Giridhar Bhawan is a very old building and, there was some repairing work going on. Therefore, there wasn't anybody in the building. The rear part of the building collapsed," said Ramarao Pawar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 2, Mumbai.

In the incident, five members of Lalta Prasad Ojha's family died.

He and his son Sanjay got injured while his wife - Pratibha (36), son - Anurag (8), daughters - Anjali (2.5) and Anushka (5), and other family member - Malti (47) died.

As soon as the news spread, rescue efforts were launched and 10 fire brigades reached the spot. The building is about 50-60 years old and had undergone some maintenance work recently.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared it as 'dangerous building' and notice given to all tenants to vacant this building. This building was half empty.

"This building was very old and the BMC has already issued a notice to residents to vacate the building," said Shubha Kaul, Mayor.

There are at least 19,000 buildings in Mumbai that are marked as dangerous to live in by the BMC.

The incident brought back memories of the collapse of 'Lakshmi Chhaya' building in Borivili last month that killed 28 persons.
