Workers of Chennai port threatened to launch an indefinite strike from September 1, if authorities dont hike wages and retirement age.

Chennai, Aug 17 : Workers of Chennai port threatened to launch an indefinite strike from September 1, if authorities don't hike wages and retirement age.

Hundreds of workers shouted slogans and brandished flags as they protested under the banner of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) at the port offices in the city on Thursday.

The workers demanded additional allowances and rollback of an order lowering retirement age from 60 years to 58 years.

"The port management and the shipping transport industry did not care about our demands," said K.Kaalan, General Secretary, INTUC, Tamil Nadu.

They urged the Central shipping ministry to intervene in the matter, that is a subject of the Chennai Port Trust.

Chennai's is the second largest port in the country, after Mumbai. Between January and April this year, it handled 18.84 million tonnes of cargo.
