Puducherry, Aug 17 : A Court here today deferred the Sankararaman murder case till September 21, in which the Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi and his junior Vijayendra Saraswathi, are the main accused. Of the 24 accused, only seven were present when the case came up for hearing before the Principal Sessions Judge D Krishnaraja.
The Kanchi seers were not present in the court.
The seer and the co-accused have also been framed with charges of criminal conspiracy, misleading the court by giving false information to protect the offenders and criminal trespass.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court had stayed the trial in the case. The seer had challenged the Madras High Court order, which had allowed the Tamil Nadu Government to continue with its own prosecutor even though the case was shifted to Puducherry by the apex court. Sankararaman, Managing Trustee of the Lord Varadaraja Perumal temple at Kancheepuram, was murdered on September 3, 2004, allegedly at the behest of the accused.
