The Centre today said that it is considering to make registration of marriages compulsory in the wake of Supreme Court judgement and the recommendations submitted by National Human Rights Commission and National Commission for Women.
New Delhi, Aug 17 : The Centre today said that it is considering to make registration of marriages compulsory in the wake of Supreme Court judgement and the recommendations submitted by National Human Rights Commission and National Commission for Women.
In a written reply in Lok Sabha today Minister of State for Law and Justice, K. Venkatapathy stated: "In view of the importance and complexity of the matter, it may take some more time before a Bill could be brought before the Cabinet."
On July 23, 2007 the Supreme Court reiterated its earlier judgement of February 14, 2006 stating that marriages of all persons who are citizens of India belonging to various religions should be compulsorily registered in their respective States, where the marriage is solemnized.
