New Delhi, Aug 16 : Activists of the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an international animal rights group, on Thursday protested against the torture of animals in slaughterhouses.
The activists staged skits outside an international exhibition and conference on the Indian animal industry here, seeking to draw the attention of both farmers and industry.
According to PETA, animals are often carried in cramped vehicles to slaughterhouses, and many of them are injured or die en route.
"Animals do not wish to die, even they wish to live like we do. Why do we torture animals, or kill them, when we can turn into a vegetarian," said Rohini Kamath, Campaign Coordinator of PETA.
Kamath claimed that animals are often killed in the presence of one another, and dismembered and skinned while still alive in slaughterhouses.
She alleged that the Indian Animal Industry Expo would promote more slaughter cruelty of animals.
Participants at the exposition said organizations like PETA should hold their protests outside slaughterhouses and not at the conference venue.
"It is good that they are protesting against cruelty towards animals, but they should do it in front of the slaughterhouse, or where animals are being treated badly. The expo is for the welfare of farmers," said Baljeet Singh, a farmer from Haryana.
PETA espouses vegetarianism, while educating policymakers and the public about animal abuse and promoting an understanding of the right of all animals to be treated with respect.
