Monsoon rains wreak havoc in Haridwar

Incessant monsoon rains have thrown life out of gear in Haridwar. The Ganges is flowing above the danger mark.

Haridwar (Uttarakhand), Aug 16 : Incessant monsoon rains have thrown life out of gear in Haridwar. The Ganges is flowing above the danger mark.

Waters of the Ganges have submerged parts of the clustered city, and caused a heavy loss of property.

An alert has been declared in the city. Many say they have never witnessed a calamity of such proportion in decades.

"This is the first time in the history of Haridwar and my life's first experience that from Har ki Pauri to Bara Bazaar, Moti Bazaar, Kisan Ghat and Vishnu Ghat, traders have suffered such heavy loss, in millions. The shops' basements and housing expensive supplies are now all filled with mud," said Raman, a traders' association leader.

Authorities have urged the people to cooperate with municipal workers.

"It is not just the duty of the government, but everyone needs to come together and find a solution, otherwise such disasters will strike us again," said Anandvardhan, the District Magistrate.

Floods, caused by incessant rains over the past week, have displaced hundreds of people, besides destroying crops and houses.

The latest bout of monsoon flooding, which began about three weeks ago, has affected about 30 million people across India.

According to international aid agencies, governments need to do more to mitigate the impact of the annual flooding.
