Phey (Jammu and Kashmir), Aug 16 : Hundreds of tourists joined a adrenaline-raising river rafting event in Ladakh.Tourists, both domestic and foreign, thronged the banks of the Zangskar River for the rafting expedition.
"It is very difficult to do river rafting and kayaking in this area. The water here is very cold and hard," said Chotak, a guide.
The most popular rafting points in the area are from Phey to Nimo, Upshi toharu, Upshi to Nimo.
The other points run from Phey to Saspol or Phey to the Indus-Zanskar confluence at Nimo and from Nimo to the historical monastic enclave of Alchi, about 75 Kms west of Leh.
River rafting also provides employment opportunities to youth of the area, who act as guides.
"The season for river rafting is for three months - June, July and August. Tourists during that time number between 1500 - 3000. It is very good money for us when these tourists come here, especially for river rafting and other adventure sports," said Nimu, a guide.
Over 10,000 foreign tourists visit to Ladakh to take part in river rafting expenditure annually.
