New Delhi, Aug 16 : The Centre today announced extending truce with Assamese rebel group United People's Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) for more six months, which has a considerable presence in the Karbi-Anglong and North Cachar Hills area in the State.
"This follows a tripartite meeting of the representatives of the Union Home Ministry, Government of Assam and UPDS held on July 30, 2007," a release issued by the government stated today.
The Karbi Longri National Liberation Front (KLNLF) that massacred Hindi-speaking people in the State recently is a breakaway faction of the UPDS, and is against holding peace talks with the government.
During the tripartite talks where representatives of UPDS held talks with the government delegation led by Joint Secretary for the Northeast in the Union Home Ministry, Navin Verma, and the Assam Home Commissioner, Rajiv Bora, they reviewed the functioning of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangement and observance of agreed ground rules.
Officials of the army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Defence Ministry were also present there.
So far six rounds of talks have taken place between the UPDS and the government since the ceasefire took effect in 2002.
