Minor blasts fail to spoil Independence Day celebrations in Assam

The 60th anniversary celebrations of countrys independence passed off peacefully, barring two minor blasts, in Assam on Wednesday.

Guwahati, Aug 15 : The 60th anniversary celebrations of country's independence passed off peacefully, barring two minor blasts, in Assam on Wednesday.

A large number of people attended the main function here, where Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi hoisted the national flag in spite of a shut down called by the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).

"The government is concerned by the dastardly killings by the militants. We condemn the incidents perpetrated by militant outfits," said Gogoi in his address.

Meanwhile, suspected rebels threw grenades in Dhubri and Bongaigaon Districts of the state, wounding five people including two policemen. According to officials, two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) exploded near Gandhi Maidan in Bongaigaon town at 8.23 a.m., injuring two persons.

The parade ground is adjacent to a police reserve and about 150 metres away from the Independence Day celebration venue.
