New Delhi, Aug 15 : After a Left-UPA spat over the nuclear deal, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has good news for him when the country celebrates its 60 years of independence today. A recent survey has put Dr. Singh's approval rating as Prime Minister to 77 per cent up by 20 per cent in last such opinion poll conducted in January this year.
The poll conducted by Indian Express-Dawn News-CNN-IBN has found that 73 per cent of the pollsters are 'satisfied' with the UPA government's performance, and only a miniscule 17 percent expressed their dissatisfaction over Manmohan's performance.
The news could be good for Congress-led UPA government, which is caught in a tussle over the Indo-US nuclear deal with the Left parties that gives the crucial support to the government.
"These figures represent a gain of 25 and 20 points respectively, largely because the NDA voters in the big cities are less unkind to the current rulers than they were a few months ago," said Yogendra Yadav of Centre for Developing Societies (CSDS).
However, he also cautioned that there is a difficulty to estimate the range of error in the poll.
"To err on the safer side, one can conclude that there is no evidence of decline of support for the ruling coalition," Yadav added.
The poll also found that the political trust for top political leaders of the country remains very high among the urban votes who were sampled for this survey.
While UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and incumbent Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have almost same amount of political trust reposed by voters, which is around 75 percent, same is not true for BJP leader and Leader of the opposition L K Advani as only 53 per cent of the voters reposed their political trust on him during the survey.
