New Delhi, Aug 15 : On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the country's independence, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior leader Lal Krishna Advani today outlined three reasons that had helped India earn worldwide respect.
"First is the proper implementation of the principles of democracy in the last 60 years and second is the waiving of the License and Permit Raj, which were hampering our economic growth," Advani said.
Wishing the people a happy Independence Day, he said, "The third reason is the nuclear test at Pokhran (in May 1998) that helped India get worldwide recognition as an atomic power."
India had conducted two nuclear tests on May 11 and 13 in 1998.
The tests were conducted when the BJP Government was in power at the Centre with Atal Bihari Vajpayee as Prime Minister. These nuclear tests resulted in a range of sanctions against India by several countries.
