Kashmir decked up for Independence Day celebrations

School children in Kashmir are enthusiastic about participating in the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Independence to be held here tomorrow.

Srinagar, Aug 14 : School children in Kashmir are enthusiastic about participating in the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Independence to be held here tomorrow.

Children and contingents of police and paramilitary forces held a final dress rehearsal on Tuesday.

"India is the only nation in the world where Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians live together in peace. I am very proud of my nation and I salute my nation for this," said Gurmeet Kaur, a student participant.

"We are so excited that we have been selected to represent our school in this year's Independence Day celebration. We are very proud," said Sajaad Ahmed, another student.

Most of the government buildings and streets in Srinagar have been illuminated with decorative lights.

Meanwhile, security has been stepped up across the State.

Security forces have virtually sealed the Bakshi Stadium, venue of the main celebrations in Kashmir.

"We are checking all vehicles. There are no strict restrictions, but we are making sure that there is enough security to stop any untoward incident," said S.M. Sahi, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Division.

The residents near Bakshi Stadium are being searched and sharp shooters have been placed atop high-rise building in the adjacent areas.

Tight security is also in place at other vital installations, including airport, television station and telephone exchange.

Special checkpoints have been set up and all vehicles entering the city are being checked.

Meanwhile, Kashmiri separatist groups have called for a general strike tomorrow, calling it a "black day".
