Madurai, Aug 12 : United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi today expressed happiness over the functioning of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) in Tamil Nadu.

After inaugurating a train service on the newly laid broad gauge track between Rameswaram and Manamadurai, Sonia lauded the State coalition and said it is "strong and functioning extremely well".

"Tamil Nadu has also created a distinct identity for itself and emerged stronger," she added.

Sonia also flagged off the Rameswaram-Chennai 'Sethu Express' here today.

The broad gauge line should be a boon for lakhs of visitors to Rameswaram, she said, adding, "The Southern Railway project will provide 2,000 km of BG line."

In 2007-08, 350 km of lines would be taken up for gauge conversion in the State.

The Pamban Railway Bridge was converted into broad gauge standard using indigenous technology provided by the Structural Engineering Research Centre, Chennai, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.

The 2.06-km long bridge connects the mainland at Mandapam with Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu.
