Tamil Nadu fishermen are celebrating the onset of the fishing season.

Thurai Mangalam, Perambalur (Tamil Nadu), Aug. 1 : Tamil Nadu fishermen are celebrating the onset of the fishing season.
Villagers in the fishing hamlet of Tamil Nadu's Perambalur District said they were happy to be visiting the pond to catch fish.
Kannan, a fisherman, said that this annual ritual has been in vogue for decades and involved the participation of all sections of society.
The ritual of visiting the pond for fishing also promoted amity in the community, he added.
"Every year, we come here to fish, with friends and relatives. There is a lot of happiness all around," said Dharmaraj, another fisherman. The ritual also has a competitive edge, with the community honouring the one who catches the biggest fish.
Each fisherman is allowed to keep his catch, which they cook and serve as part of the festivities.
The fishing season will celebrated till August. ndian marine exports were wroth an estimated 51,167 million rupees in 1999-2000 compared to the 17,674 million rupees during 1992-1993. he figure is expected to go up to a whopping four billion dollars by 2010.
India mainly exports frozen fish, cuttlefish, squid and dried items to countries like Canada, Tunisia, Puerto Rico, Russia, Lithuania, the Fiji Islands and Bangladesh.
