Gurgaon, Haryana, India
'Discovery Journeys - India' and 'Across the Divide - UK' are arranging a charity run in support of Cancer Research and Well Child - two UK based charities - for the first time in India. The Taj Marathon, to be run in September 2008, not only challenges the physical limits of the participant, but also appeals to his conscience to come forward and support a noble cause.
The Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is among the most easily recognised monuments on the planet: a monument synonymous with eternal love. Its irresistible charm draws millions of tourists to the medieval city of Agra, not only from within the country, but also from the four corners of the globe.
400 years ago the fifth Moghul Emperor Shahjahan built the magnificent Taj Mahal - still glowing majestically with the richest hues of art. On moonlit nights, draped in moonbeams, the Taj appears to float gently on the Jamuna River, and it seems as if its silent columns unceasingly whisper undying tales of love! Sightseers from the world over stand mesmerised by its exquisite beauty.
The annals of the Moghul dynasty are marked by bloody battles and court intrigues, but their most outstanding bequest to the world, immortalised in white marble, now lends its name to a charitable event - The Taj Mahal Marathon!
Envisaged by Discovery Journeys India Pvt. Ltd. the Taj Mahal Marathon took two years of meticulous planning by the Discovery team. Discovery Journeys India has its roots in a specialised adventure company, recognized by Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India set up decades ago, to organise luxurious camping holidays and nature expeditions in the Himalayas. The successors continue the good work and apart from their expertise in organising adventure, culture and wildlife tours, the company has played a critical role in mega events, such as the vintage Himalayan Car Rally, run between Rawalpindi and Kolkata. Its future projects include the 'The Silk Route Overland 2007'; 'Motorbike Challenge 2007', and the 'Land Rover G4 Challenge 2008', in the Western Himalayas.
Discovery's partner 'Across the Divide' is a UK based Adventure Company with a focus on organising events like the Taj Mahal Marathon. ATD has organised over 300 challenges, in over 35 different countries and raised £24 million for charity. With the Taj Marathon it brings its expertise to India in collaboration with Discovery Journeys India.
Legend has it that Pheidippides died to bring the news of victory to the Athenians, but the Taj Mahal Marathon brings hope to hundreds who suffer in silence!
