The schedule for the delivery of Gorshkov aircraft carrier has been further delayed to 2011, according to Russian media reports.
New Delhi, Aug 1 : The schedule for the delivery of Gorshkov aircraft carrier has been further delayed to 2011, according to Russian media reports.
Russian news agency Interfax quoting an unnamed official of Sevmash shipyard, where the aircraft carrier is undergoing repair work, stated that the shipyard's Director General Vladimir Pastukhov had been dismissed after failing to meet deadlines.
"The contract is delayed for three years," the news agency quoted the source, who added, "The realistic date is now 2011."
The delay has been attributed to lack of money allocated for the renovation and 'awful' state of ship's technological condition.
The reports of delay in the delivery of Gorshkov, re-christened as INS Vikramaditya, has caused concern in the Defence Ministry as the Indian Navy was ready to induct the second aircraft carrier, the first being INS Viraat, in its fleet in 2008.
The Defence Ministry has repeatedly stated that the delivery of the aircraft carrier will be in accordance to the agreement that was inked in 2004 by the then NDA government.
The Ministry has said that there has been no official intimation from the Russian side regarding the delay in the delivery schedule.
In the last Budget Session of the Parliament Defence Minister A K Antony had said: "Russian side has assured at the highest level that the ship will be delivered as per contract. The aircraft carrier is undergoing necessary repairs / modifications in Russia at present. The project is being closely monitored by the Empowered Apex Committee headed by the Defence Secretary and the Steering Committee headed by the Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition."
India and Russia inked the 1.5 billion-dollar-deal as per which India will get the refitted 45,000 tonnes aircraft carrier, along with twelve single-seat MiG-29K and four dual-seat MiG-29KUB aircraft.
Russia has also agreed to provide facilities and procedures for training of pilots and technical staff, delivery of simulators, spare parts, and establishing maintenance facilities in India.
