August 17, 2012 - Washington

US Health Officials advised all baby boomers to get a one-time blood test to learn if they have the Hepatitis C virus. The virus can cause liver damage and it takes decades for the symptoms to emerge.

More than 3.2 million Americans were estimated to have been infected by the Hepatitis C virus, and about two-thirds of them were baby boomers. A baby boomer is a person born between 1945 and 1965.

More than 15,000 Americans die each year from Hepatitis C related illness and most of them are baby boomers. The virus is spread commonly through sharing needles to inject drugs. It was also spread through blood transfusions before screening began in 1992.
